Wildflowers, Wildlife & the Start of Summer at Red Rock Ranch
As the last patches of snow melt from the Gros Ventre peaks, something shifts in the air here at Red Rock Ranch. The birdsong grows louder, the creeks run faster, and all around us, the landscape begins to bloom. Summer is nearly here, and with it, the Stimmel family is back on the ranch, preparing for the season ahead.
There’s nothing quite like late spring at our Wyoming dude ranch. The drive in is lined with fresh green grass, and soon enough, wildflowers start to emerge—yellow balsamroot swaying in the breeze, purple lupine tucked among the sage, and bright red Indian paintbrush adding that classic Wyoming touch. Every morning brings a new bloom, transforming the meadows in real time.
As nature awakens, we’re doing our part too. Horses stretch their legs in the pastures. Cabins get a fresh polish. Our team begins to arrive, bringing energy and off-season tales. We’re out on the trails, checking for downed trees, organizing gear, and tending the garden to ensure summer meals are packed with just-picked flavor.
One of the most magical aspects of spring on a Wyoming guest ranch is the wildlife. Elk calves have been spotted near the willows, sandhill cranes dance across the fields, and moose meander down from the hills. Bluebirds are back, reclaiming their nesting boxes. It’s a quiet reminder of the vibrant ecosystem we’re lucky to be a part of.
Soon, families will begin to arrive, some discovering us for the first time, others returning for their annual tradition. Kids will race to the creek, parents will lace up hiking boots, and the dining room will buzz with stories, laughter, and the scent of fresh coffee and warm bread.
Right now, though, it’s just us the Stimmels and our amazing staff savoring these golden spring days and putting our hearts into every detail so that when our guests arrive, they feel right at home. Summer at Red Rock Ranch is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to welcome you back to the wild beauty of Wyoming.
