More About Martin Black

Martin helped to pioneer Evidence-Based Horsemanship with neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Peters. Evidence-Based Horsemanship brings modern science to the world of horse training to help inform and create “best practices” in all areas of training and care. This truly remarkable approach helps to bridge the gulf between man and beast. You’ll learn how we differ in thought and action from the horse and how we can work best together.

Visit Martin Black’s website for more information. You can also find him on Facebook.

After more than 30 years of ranching in Idaho, Nevada, and California, Martin switched his focus from cattle ranching to working with horses. His reputation and expertise soon found him traveling coast to coast in the US, as well as to such far-flung places as Europe, Australia, and Brazil.

Since beginning his clinics, Martin has worked with a number of Hall of Famers and All Time Leading Trainers of cutting, reining, and race horses. He has also started many horses who’ve gone on to be champions including celebrated racehorses like Pleasantly Perfect and champion working horses like Smart Little Scoot. Martin has also competed in a variety of events, earning many awards and over $75,000 in Stock Horse and NRCHA events.

Testimonials

“A word that I use to describe a Martin Black clinic is ‘transformational.’ His patient gift of ferreting out what an array of riders’ personalities seek and what their skill levels require is singular in approach. He creates a solid foundation upon which you want to come back to build the next level, set the next goal.”

Martha Gose

“I learn something each and every time. A lot of ‘somethings!’ Watching Martin start or coach people with their colts is worth a million dollars … understanding why a horse does what he does … and how to use this perspective to the betterment of both horse and human … is mind-blowing. Blessed to have met this horseman!”

Deitra Robertson

“Martin is acutely aware of the horse’s learning process and he always knows a good place to stop and ‘settle for that!’ The horses here in my barn are happier, more relaxed, and more fun to ride since we have been practicing horsemanship skills with Martin Black.”

Registrant Information

  • Horse Information *

  • We encourage you to bring your own horse to the clinic. We have a limit of two horses per registrant. (1) Horse for horsemanship exercises and (1) Colt for the colt starting section of the clinic.
The horse you ride in the horsemanship part of the clinic must be far enough along in their training that you can : mount , walk, off , trot, lope and stop independently in an open area . This is for your benefit so you and your horse can be productive useful and learn during the clinic . Colts : non- started and slightly handled are the best clients however a restart to a colt has been addressed and has found great success.
  • Horse Health

  • Upon arrival to Red Rock Ranch be prepared to show a copy of your horses coggins, and health/travel documents. It is extremely important your horse is healthy and non- contagious while staying at Red Rock . The integrity and good health of the the ranches herd is paramount. At Red Rock we try very hard to limit the herds expose to outside sicknesses . Also the other horses in the clinic and their health is vital .
